In the Garden Sorrow Built

How is it

that falling

(sometimes) feels like flying?

(Sometimes)

feels

like

soaring.

Until we

(Whimsy & Faerry)

hit the

ground.

& pain

knocks us

back to life.

Faerry & I roll to our knees

then stand on our feet

grass & trees surround us.

Faerry points at my neck.

Sorrow left its fingerprints on you.

It always does,

doesn’t it?

Faerry grabs my hand & nods toward

a giant vined archway that resembles wrought iron.

The vines wind into different shapes (skulls, spiders, knives)

& in the arch at the top is a sign,

spiked poisonous vines—

 ABANDON ALL HOPE

ALL WHO ENTER SORROW’S GARDEN.

Faerry holds my hand tighter.

Do you remember?

I ask.

We were friends. We were 8, you got lost in the Forest,

 I ran after you … because we were guilty.

Faerry exhales slowly.

The Forest is different this time,

 Sorrow isn’t just a voice this time,

Sorrow has a face this time.

I think it’s ’cause we have

lived with Sorrow now. It has grown.

I touch Faerry’s cheek.

You look frightened.

I am.

He swallows.

I am always so frightened

of forgetting, of my own hands.

I am frightened too,

I confess.

Should we turn back?

Or maybe we could just stay here.

My spirit falters.

We can only go forward.

Remember?

Together.

Faerry faces the vined archway.

Hello, Sorrow.

Always together.

I tighten my rib cage—armor ready.

Bonjour, Sorrow.

This time the Garden is darker,

older, wittier than when

we entered it 10 years ago—

& living has beaten us both raw.

We enter through the archway

together (again).
